Best in Asia list - Lonely Planet's No. 1

For this third annual Best in Asia list, Lonely Planet’s in-house Asia experts have named “eclectic” and “vibrant” Busan, South Korea, as the number one destination; while the jewelled architecture and ancient cities of Uzbekistan are in second place; and in third comes Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, “a supercity that somehow keeps getting cooler”.
“Asia is such a vast and diverse continent for anyone dreaming of an escape,” Lonely Planet’s Asia- Pacific Media Spokesperson, Chris Zeiher says. “Our experts have combed through thousands of recommendations to pick the best destinations to visit over the next 12 months”.
“From Nagasaki in Japan, to Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka,” Chris says, “this is a line-up to inspire a multitude of travellers – whether they’re based in Asia, or maybe they’ve already visited some of the region’s heavy-hitting destinations”.

NASA's InSight Probe Just Landed on Mars. Here's What it's Doing There

Time Mag Insight lands on Mars

Humanity may be years away from setting foot on Mars, but the Red Planet is turning into something of a monument park for our species all the same. Rovers and landers—some still operating, some having completed their functional life—dot the surface, and orbiters cross the skies overhead. On November 26 at 2:47 PM EST, one more machine joined the growing fleet, and it will be less concerned with what happens on or above Mars and more with what goes on within it.
Launched last May on a 270-million mile arcing trajectory to Mars, the new addition to the Martian family is known as the Mars InSight lander. The name is another in a series of decidedly labored but nonetheless illuminating acronyms for NASA spacecraft—in this case standing for “Interior exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport.” (The selective capitalizations are, in fairness, a step up from 2004’s Mercury MESSENGER mission, which stood for MErcury Surface Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging mission. Really.)
Still, the clumsy name belies a nimble ship. InSight weighs just 1,530 lbs., including fuel and the protective aeroshell designed to help it survive the plunge through Mars’s tenuous atmosphere. It measures just 33 to 43 inches tall, depending on how far its three spindly legs compress after landing. The main body of the spacecraft is just 5 ft. wide, without its solar panels deployed. But NASA engineers have packed a lot of science into that comparatively small package.

Why Science Can't Replace Religion - The Crux

Why Science Can't Replace Religion - The Crux:

Absolutism is one of the uglier traits of religion that still pervades too many corners of the Earth today, breeding intolerance and normalizing abhorrent actions. But a response that indicts all religion as a stain on humanity is equally absolutist. It is also inconsistent with the spirit of science.

Kande Viharaya Temple at Aluthgama (Sri Lanka)

Hi everyone =) I’m back to my blog after a long and well-earned rest ;)

I want to wish all of you a wonderful, prosperous and peaceful New Year 2013!!

This post is about the latest (itsy bitsy) outing the family went on last year. “Outings” are getting to be a rather “difficult” word in our home now, with our daughter’s birth… Anyway here goes…

Last 28th December 2012, my family went to the Kanda Viharaya (Temple) at Kaluwamodara, Aluthgama. Kande Viharaya is an old and historical religious site in Sri Lanka, where thousands of Buddhist (and non-Buddhist) devotees flock daily to make and fulfill vows as well as make religious observances. The temple is known for its serene atmosphere and natural habitat as well as the beautiful frescos and paintings that adorn many of its buildings.

A little bit of history –

The temple is so called because it is a temple or “Viharaya” situated on top of a hill or "Kanda" in Sinhala. It is also known as the "Aluthgama Kande Viharaya" or "Bentota Kande Viharaya" because of its close proximity to the towns of Aluthgama & Bentota.

There is also nine devalas including four “Maha Devala” within the temple premises, out of which the Vishnu and Paththini Devala are well – known among devotees. Women who are not blessed with children come to the Paththini Devala expecting their dreams to come true and many people come to the Vishnu Devala seeking relief for their problems. Farmers bring their first harvest to the temple and to be blessed by the gods.

Kande Viharaya does not hold any religious processions or “perahera”. The temple is open to devotees from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Kande Viharaya belongs to the Theravada Nikaya and was founded by Venerable Karapagala Dewamitta Thero, back in 1734. Now, under the patronage of the Chief Incumbent the Ven. Batuwanhene Sri Buddharakkitha Thero, Kande Viharaya continues to be a vital link in the socio cultural & religious activities in the country.

In the premises you will find

  • The tallest sitting Buddha statue that was constructed within the shortest time
  • Nine devalas dedicated to Godd Vishnu, Kataragama, Saman, Paththini, Ishwara, Sooniyam, Gana, Kaali and Senasuru Deviyo
  • The "Kshethrarama Pirivena" founded by the Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero in 1904 which acts as a vital centre in Buddhist education in the country.
  • Sri Saranatissa Memorial Library
  • Three-storeyed Bhikkhu hostel
  • Two-storeyed resting place
  • A spacious hall to prepare pooja
  • Bodhighara with a golden fence around the Bo-tree
  • Special frescos and paintings can be found in the underground hall under the sitting Buddha image, which have been done in memory of victims of the tsunami
